Yakutian Laika

Yakutian Laika is a dog breed originating from Siberia. This breed of dog is generally medium-sized, with a fairly dense coat and moderately long legs. They are very hardy and capable of working in severe arctic conditions.

General details

The breed is medium-sized. Males can weigh between 20 and 25 kg, while females range from 17 to 22 kg. Height in males is between 55 and 59 cm and in females between 53 and 57 cm. Their life expectancy is 12 to 15 years. Furthermore, they belong to Group 5 of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which includes Spitz and primitive type dogs.

The Yakutian Laika is an ancient dog breed originating from northeastern Russia, naturally bred by the indigenous peoples of the region. For over 8,000 years, these dogs have been used as sled dogs, especially for postal service, and for hunting, adapting to the harsh conditions of the extreme cold of the Far North. The first documented mention of Yakutian dogs dates back to 1633, and the breed was officially described in 1843. The Yakutian Laika has played a fundamental role in the lives of local inhabitants, helping with hunting, reindeer herding, and the transportation of goods. This versatility has led the breed to be recognized not only in Russia, but also in other countries. The first official breed standard was established in 1958, and in 2005, the Russian Cynological Federation published the current standard.

Breed characteristics

The Yakutian Laika is a medium-sized, compact dog with a well-muscled body and moderately long legs. The head is triangular in shape, moderately pointed and proportional to the body size, with almond-shaped eyes that can be dark brown or blue, even with different colored eyes. The ears are triangular in shape, covered with hair and can be erect or slightly drooping. Its tail, which is carried high, is covered in thick fur and curls in a semicircle over its back. The coat is dense, thick and shiny, with a very well-developed undercoat that protects it from low temperatures, and its color varies between white with bi-color or tri-color patches. Regarding its behavior, the Yakutian Laika is characterized by its energy and sociability, showing great closeness to people and a balanced character.

Common health problems

Yakutian Laika can be subject to various diseases and disorders. These include hip dysplasia, dilated cardiomyopathy, von Willebrand's disease, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, Addison's disease, lens disease, epilepsy and spinocerebellar ataxia.
