Breed history in brief

The Tenterfield Terrier is a breed of dog of Australian origin that has gained popularity as a companion and working dog. Its history dates back to the 19th century, when English settlers brought several hunting and ratting dogs to Australia, which were used to control rat and mouse populations in rural areas. In the 1870s, in the town of Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia, a man named George Woolnough began breeding terrier-type dogs. His dogs were used primarily for hunting rabbits, rats and foxes, and earned an excellent reputation for their bravery and hunting skills. Woolnough crossed his dogs with other breeds, including the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Manchester Terrier, in order to improve certain characteristics. Over time, the Tenterfield Terrier established itself as a distinctive breed and earned a place in Australia's dog breeding community.
