Petit Bleu de Gascogne

The Petit Bleu de Gascogne is a French scent hound, with a noble silhouette, a blue mottled coat, a musical voice, and a calm but determined hunting character. Despite the word "Petit", it is not a small dog; the name alludes to its reduction compared to the Grand Bleu de Gascogne and its use in hunting small game, especially hare. As a pack dog, it usually values other dogs, stable routines, and outdoor work that allows it to use its sense of smell. At home, it needs secure containment, patient training, and owners who understand the independence and voice of a hound.

General details

The FCI recognizes the Petit Bleu de Gascogne as standard number 31 in Group 6, Scenthounds, Section 1.2, medium-sized hounds, with working trial. The FCI lists France as the country of origin and describes the breed as a multipurpose hound used for hunting with the gun and sometimes coursing, with hare as its favourite game. FCI height is 52 to 58 cm for males and 50 to 56 cm for females. UKC also recognizes the breed in its Scenthound Group. The coat is short, dense, and black-and-white mottled, creating the slate-blue effect that gives the Gascony blue hounds their name. The breed is moderate, with substance, endurance, and easy movement.

Breed history in brief

The Petit Bleu de Gascogne belongs to the old hound tradition of Gascony in southwestern France. The FCI standard describes it as a deliberate reduction in size of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, linked directly to its intended use. UKC gives a broader historical account, connecting the breed to ancient French scenthounds, the hounds of Gaul, and the development of the Grand Bleu de Gascogne. The smaller version became especially useful for hare, while still retaining the stamina, scenting ability, voice, and pack instincts of the larger blue hounds. UKC recognized the breed in 1991. Today the breed remains uncommon outside hunting circles and countries where French scenthounds are maintained, but it is valued by enthusiasts for its steadiness and distinctive type.

Breed characteristics

This hound should be medium-sized, well proportioned, and distinguished. The head is long and refined, with a black nose, brown oval eyes, and ears that are moderately fine, curled inward, and long enough to reach at least the end of the nose. The chest is long and let down to the elbow, the feet are oval, and the tail is slender and carried in sabre fashion. The coat is short and profuse. Its typical colour is entirely mottled black and white, often with black patches on either side of the head, tan points above the eyes and on the cheeks, lips, ears, legs, and under the tail. The FCI describes the breed as having a fine nose, intent hunting style, beautiful voice, good pack work, calm and affectionate character, and easy obedience. UKC emphasizes determination, endurance, self-confidence, scenting ability, and a deep melodious voice. In daily life this means the Petit Bleu de Gascogne needs safe opportunities to sniff, walk, and explore. Recall training is important but should not be trusted blindly around game scent. The short coat is simple to brush, but long ears need regular checks for irritation, moisture, and debris.

Common health problems

There is limited public breed-specific health research for the Petit Bleu de Gascogne. The FCI and UKC standards both stress functional soundness and penalize defects that affect health or work, but they do not list a disease profile. Practical care should therefore focus on common scenthound concerns. Long, low-set ears can trap moisture and debris, so otitis externa and ear irritation should be watched for, especially in dogs that hunt or swim. Active hounds can suffer foot cuts, muscle strains, and tick exposure after field work. Maintaining a lean body condition helps protect joints and stamina. Because it is a medium-to-large, deep-chested hound, owners should also know the signs of bloat, even though breed-specific risk data is sparse. Responsible breeders should select for sound movement, correct temperament, clear eyes, healthy ears, and family longevity, and owners should arrange routine veterinary care rather than waiting for obvious lameness or ear pain.
