Peruvian Hairless

The Peruvian Viringo is a canine breed originating in Peru that stands out for its distinctive characteristic of being hairless, which is why it is also known as the Peruvian Hairless Dog.

General details

Males usually weigh between 8 and 25 kilograms, while females usually weigh between 8 and 20 kg. In terms of height, males measure around 40 to 50 centimeters, and females have a height of 35 to 45 cm. As for their life expectancy, it is estimated that the Peruvian Viringo can live between 12 and 15 years. They belong to Group 5 of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which groups Spitz and primitive type dogs.

Breed history in brief

It is an ancient breed believed to have its origins in the pre-Columbian cultures of the Peruvian coast. Its presence dates back more than 3,000 years, being considered one of the oldest canine breeds in America. These dogs were highly valued by ancient Peruvian civilizations, such as the Moche, Chancay and Chimu, who bred and revered them as companions and guardians. They were attributed healing properties and were considered sacred. In the 20th century, efforts were initiated to preserve and promote the breed. In 1985, the Peruvian Viringo was officially recognized as a national cultural heritage by the Peruvian National Institute of Culture. Today, the Peruvian Viringo continues to be valued and appreciated for its history and uniqueness. In addition to being a loyal and affectionate pet, it is also found participating in dog shows and assisted therapies.

Breed characteristics

The Peruvian Viringo is a medium-sized breed with a slender appearance. Its medium sized eyes have a slight almond shape and can have different colors, ranging from black to yellow. The ears are long and, when the dog is at rest, they rest close back. However, when alert, the ears are held erect. In addition, there are wrinkles in the skin, especially around the head and neck. One of the most distinctive characteristics of this breed is its hairless appearance, although some individuals may have a slight amount of hair on the head or tail. In addition, it is important to mention that there is a variety of this breed with hair, which is characterized by a smooth, short and compact coat. Its fur can present a variety of shades, including black, gray, brown or even shades of light pink. The Peruvian Viringo is a breed known for its nobility and affection towards its family members.
