Karakachan

The Karakachan is a breed of dog of Bulgarian origin, known for its imposing size and for being a livestock guarding dog.

General details

Males weigh between 50 and 60 kg, while females weigh between 40 and 50 kg. Regarding their height, males measure between 65 and 75 cm at the shoulder, while females measure between 60 and 70 cm. As for their life expectancy, it is estimated to be between 10 and 12 years. They are not recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

The Karakachan dog breed originates from Bulgaria and its history goes back centuries, where they were used by shepherds and farmers to protect their flocks and homes from predators and thieves. Its evolution has been linked to the work in these tasks, and has allowed the development of a strong and resistant dog. It has dark eyes and triangular, drooping ears. Its coat is thick and dense, with a soft, woolly undercoat and a thick, straight outer coat. The most common colors are gray and white, although it can also have black and brown spots. The Karakachan is a courageous, intelligent and loyal dog. It has a strong protective instinct and is independent and territorial, showing great courage when facing any threat. It is extremely loyal and affectionate to its family. He requires early socialization and consistent education to ensure a balanced temperament.

Some of the diseases to which they are predisposed include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion and heart disease such as dilated cardiomyopathy.
