Breed history in brief

The history of the American Pit Bull Terrier began in the 19th century in England, where they were bred for bull and bear baiting. The breed was created by crossing the English Bulldog and several Terrier breeds, with the aim of obtaining a strong, agile and tenacious dog. In the middle of the 19th century, the breed arrived in the United States where it developed into the current American Pit Bull Terrier. The breed was bred as prey dogs for cattle and pigs, hunting, herding and family companionship. However, in the 20th century, the breed was used for tasks that masked the breed's reputation, such as illegal fighting. To this day, there is some controversy with this breed because of the negative stereotypes created. Nevertheless, it remains a popular breed and many breeders argue that with proper training, American Pit Bull Terriers can be excellent, loyal and loving companion animals.
